KENYON — The Kenyon-Wanamingo boys basketball team seemingly took a “next step” of sorts last week.
Facing a New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva team that already had 19 wins on the year, the Knights rebounded from allowing a go-ahead 3-pointer with 6.7 seconds left to win on a Ben Metcalf buzzer-beating layup.
Now, this K-W team that has already secured its first winning season in more than five years is looking to build off that last-second magic in a Section 2AA North quarterfinal tilt at home against Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Tuesday. Gametime is set for 8 p.m.
Coach Matt Addington said facing LC-WM and winning will come down to execution. The Knights (16-7) have prided themselves on winning cerebral battles all over the court this season — not blowing defensive assignments, anticipating plays and limiting turnovers — and That isn’t changing heading into the playoffs.
In short, they’re looking to do things their way.
“That’s been kind of our calling card all year,” Addington said. “There are a lot of teams that you have to prepare for with a lot of specific things, but when it comes down to it we like our stuff our kids are doing regardless of opponent.”
LC-WM (13-13) is currently on a four-game losing streak, while K-W has only been on a two-game skid once this year. The Knights are currently winners of five of their last seven contests.
That includes Thursday’s last-second heroics against the Panthers.
“To go over there into a hostile environment against a team that has got 19 wins, that was big for us,” Addington said. “It didn’t count for much on paper, but coming out of it I think it’s exactly what we needed.”
