Lacey Boesen describes broomball as hockey on tennis shoes. Heather Sibley says it’s physical. John Lee characterizes it as “hard work for fat, old people.”

But for many in the Kenyon community, the weekly broomball league at the city’s outdoor skating rink is the perfect way to spend time with others.

“We’re all friends getting out and doing something rather than sitting at home watching a movie,” said Kirk Washburn, the namesake of Captain Kirk and the Stiff Bristles, one of five teams in this year’s league.

For Lee, a firefighter and captain of Fire and Ice, broomball provides a chance to get together with his fellow firefighters away from the job.

“We go into fires and stuff together,” Lee said. “It’s one more thing we can hang out together and do.”

The broomball league in Kenyon started last year with four teams, including Hicks with Sticks and the Ice Crackers as well as Lee’s and Washburn’s squads. This year, the Cool Runners became the fifth team in the league, which is looking to expand again next season — as long as word spreads.

“A lot of people still don’t know that we have it,” said Sibley, who serves on the parks and recreation board and is a member of Hicks with Sticks.

Each game consists of two 22-minute halves, with five players plus a goalie on the ice at at a time for each team. Every Wednesday, one team has the week off while the other four battle it out in the cold — regardless of how low the temperatures drop.

“It was a little chilly,” said Lee after last week’s game, which saw temperatures hover just above zero degrees. “Once you start running, it’s warm.”

The league will wrap up later this month with a tournament that will pit the top four teams against each other. Hicks with Sticks currently sits atop the standings and will look to defend what some called a controversial title from a year ago.

“It depends on who you’ve been talking to,” Lee said. “It was actually a three-way tie.”

That’s not quite how Sibley sees it, however.

“We’re the last year’s champs,” she said.
